Anti-Litter and Clean Community

Help Prevent Litter
Litter isn’t just unsightly; litter detracts from the attractiveness of the Borough. It lessens the image of Hopatcong in our eyes and the eyes of others. It hurts property values. Hopatcong is fortunate to have a very conscientious, hard working, effective Clean Communities Director, Steve Millian, and many volunteers who have “Adopted-a-Road or Area or Stream”. Please consider being a volunteer to pick up litter in your area or your block.

Hopatcong is Your Home. Keep it Litter Free.
The Borough government is quite serious about preventing litter and apprehending those who litter. In addition to the use of regular Borough employees, the Borough utilizes community service workers, employs young people for litter cleanup during the summer, contracts with the Sussex County Association of Retarded Citizens (SCARC) for cleanups, and uses Sussex County prisoners through the Sheriff’s Work Assistance Program (SWAP).

The Borough will continue to use enforcement where necessary. Although warnings are issued and voluntary cooperation is sought, violators will be prosecuted and fines imposed. Improvement comes so much easier through compliance that comes from the heart.
